How to connect Garmin to ChatGPT

ChatGPT can't see your Garmin data on its own. With a Garmin MCP connector it can: ask about last night's sleep, compare your long runs, or have it build next week's intervals and send them to your watch. This takes about five minutes.

Before you start

Step 1: connect your Garmin account

After signing up, you land on the connection page. Sign in with your Garmin Connect email and password. If you have multi-factor authentication on, Garmin emails you a code; paste it in. The sign-in happens between your browser, our server and Garmin's SSO. We never store your password. What we keep is an encrypted long-lived token (the same kind the Garmin Connect app keeps on your phone), and you can revoke it from the dashboard or by changing your Garmin password.

Once connected you'll see your Garmin display name and the time zone we detected from your Garmin settings. Fix the time zone if it's wrong; "today" in every answer depends on it.

Step 2: copy your connector URL and token

The dashboard shows your connector in the form each client needs. Pick the ChatGPT tab. You'll see two things:

Server URL: https://mcp.garmincommunitymcp.com/mcp
Bearer token: gm_live_XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Treat the token like a password: anyone with it can read (and on Athlete plans, write) your Garmin data. You can rotate it any time.

Step 3: turn on developer mode in ChatGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web or desktop app.
  2. Click your profile → Settings → Apps & Connectors.
  3. Scroll to Advanced and turn on Developer mode.

Developer mode is what allows "full MCP" connectors, including tools that write. OpenAI shows a warning that connectors can take actions; that's expected.

Step 4: create the connector

  1. Still in Apps & Connectors, click Create.
  2. Name: Garmin. Description: anything, e.g. "My Garmin Connect data".
  3. MCP server URL: paste https://mcp.garmincommunitymcp.com/mcp.
  4. Authentication: choose the API key / bearer token option and paste your token.
  5. Tick "I trust this application" and Create.

ChatGPT fetches the tool list. You should see tools like daily_overview, get_garmin_data, list_garmin_endpoints and, on Athlete plans, create_workout.

Step 5: test it

Start a new chat. Click the + (or Tools) button, and enable the Garmin connector for this chat. Then ask:

How did I sleep last night, and what's my HRV compared to baseline?

ChatGPT will call daily_overview and answer with your actual numbers. If it answers generically without calling a tool, say "use the Garmin connector" once; after that it learns to reach for it.

Writing workouts to your watch Athlete plan

Describe a session and ChatGPT turns it into a structured Garmin workout:

Create a run for Thursday: 15 min warm up in zone 2, then 5 × 1 km at 4:20–4:30/km with 90 s jog recoveries, then cool down until I press lap.

ChatGPT calls create_workout with those steps and schedule_date. Because the tool is marked as a write, ChatGPT asks you to confirm first. The workout appears in Garmin Connect → Training → Workouts and on your calendar, and syncs to the watch at the next connection. You can also log weight, hydration and blood pressure, rename activities and link gear. Full walkthrough: an AI training plan on your Garmin watch →

Troubleshooting

I don't see "Developer mode"

You're on a free plan, or your workspace admin has disabled it (Business/Enterprise). Developer mode is under Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced on paid personal plans.

"Failed to fetch tools" when creating the connector

Check the URL is exactly https://mcp.garmincommunitymcp.com/mcp and the token has no leading or trailing spaces. If you pasted the token into the URL form instead, use the plain URL with bearer auth in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT answers without using the connector

Make sure the connector is enabled for the current chat (the + / Tools menu) and say "use the Garmin connector". Starting a message with "Using my Garmin data, …" also helps.

"Token exchange failed" from a tool

Your Garmin token expired (they last about a year) or you changed your Garmin password. Reconnect from the dashboard.

Dates are off by a day

Set your time zone in the dashboard. Garmin stores days in your local calendar, and "today" is computed in that zone.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT access Garmin Connect data?

Not natively. ChatGPT can access Garmin Connect data through a custom MCP connector such as Garmin Community MCP, added in ChatGPT's developer mode. Once connected, ChatGPT can read sleep, HRV, training and activity data and, on the Athlete plan, create workouts that sync to your watch.

Do I need ChatGPT Plus to connect Garmin?

Yes. Custom MCP connectors require developer mode, which is available on paid ChatGPT plans. The free ChatGPT plan cannot add custom connectors. Claude's free plan can.

Can ChatGPT create a workout on my Garmin watch?

Yes, with the Athlete or Coach plan. Describe the session in plain English and ChatGPT calls create_workout, which builds a structured workout in your Garmin library and optionally schedules it. It syncs to your watch at the next connection.

Is connecting Garmin to ChatGPT safe?

You sign in to Garmin on our page and we store only an encrypted token, never your password. ChatGPT asks for confirmation before any tool that changes data. Details on the security page.

Does this work on the ChatGPT mobile app?

Yes. Create the connector on the web or desktop first; it then appears in the mobile app's tools for the same account.
