What is a Garmin MCP server?

A Garmin MCP server is a small service that turns your Garmin Connect data into tools an AI assistant can call. Connect one to ChatGPT or Claude and the model can look up last night's sleep, your HRV trend or your last long run while you're talking to it, instead of you pasting screenshots. Some Garmin MCP servers can also write: create a workout and send it to your watch.

First, what is MCP?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. Anthropic published it in November 2024 as an open standard for connecting AI models to outside tools and data. OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and most AI developer tools adopted it through 2025. It's often described as "USB-C for AI": one plug shape that every assistant understands.

An MCP server is a program that says "here are the tools I offer, and here's what each one needs". A client (ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor…) connects, reads that list, and lets the model call tools when a question needs them. A remote MCP server is just a URL; you paste it into the client's connector settings.

So a Garmin MCP server is…

…an MCP server whose tools fetch data from Garmin Connect. When you ask "how did I sleep?", the model sees it has a daily_overview or get_sleep tool, calls it with today's date, gets back your sleep stages, score and HRV, and answers from those numbers. The flow looks like this:

You ──"How did I sleep?"──▶ ChatGPT / Claude
                               │ calls tool: daily_overview(date="2026-10-04")
                               ▼
Garmin MCP server ──▶ Garmin Connect API ──▶ your data
                               │
                               ▼
     "6h48m, score 71, HRV 52 ms vs 61 baseline…" ◀── model writes the answer

The model only fetches what the question needs. Nothing is exported in bulk, and the data isn't used to train anything.

Read tools vs write tools

Most Garmin MCP servers are read-only. A few, including Garmin Community MCP, also offer write tools: create and schedule structured workouts (which sync to the watch), log weight, hydration and blood pressure, rename activities, link gear. MCP has a mechanism for this: each tool is annotated readOnlyHint: true or not, and well-behaved clients ask before running a non-read-only tool. That's why ChatGPT and Claude pause and ask "allow create_workout?" before putting a session on your calendar.

Does Garmin have an official one?

No. As of 2026-10-04 Garmin hasn't released an MCP server, and its Developer Program stopped accepting new API applications in spring 2026. Garmin's own AI feature, Active Intelligence in Connect+ ($6.99/mo), sends insights inside the Garmin app; it doesn't let you talk to your data from ChatGPT or Claude. Third-party Garmin MCP servers either use official API access granted before the pause, or the same interface the Garmin Connect mobile app uses. Garmin Community MCP uses the latter, the approach the widely used open-source Garmin libraries have taken for years.

FAQ

What is a Garmin MCP server?

A Garmin MCP server is a small service that exposes your Garmin Connect data as tools using the Model Context Protocol, so AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude can fetch the data on demand. Some, including Garmin Community MCP, also expose write tools that create workouts on your watch.

What is MCP?

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 and adopted by OpenAI, Google and others in 2025. It defines how an AI model discovers and calls external tools and data sources.

Does Garmin have an official MCP server?

No. As of October 2026 Garmin has not released one, and its Developer Program paused new API applications in 2026. Garmin MCP servers are third-party.

Is a Garmin MCP server the same as Garmin Connect+?

No. Connect+ is Garmin's subscription with AI-generated insights inside the Garmin app. A Garmin MCP server connects your data to the AI assistant you already use, and lets you ask anything.
