Before you start

Step 1: connect your Garmin account

Sign in with your Garmin Connect email and password on our connection page; enter the MFA code if Garmin emails you one. We never store your password. We keep an encrypted long-lived token, like the Garmin Connect app does on your phone, and you can revoke it from the dashboard. Check the detected time zone.

Step 2: copy the Claude connector URL

Open the Claude tab on your dashboard. Claude's custom-connector form doesn't accept a static bearer token, so we give you a URL with your token built in:

https://mcp.garmincommunitymcp.com/mcp/gm_live_XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

This URL is your key. Don't paste it anywhere public. Rotate it from the dashboard any time.

Step 3: add the custom connector in Claude

  1. Open claude.ai or the Claude desktop app.
  2. Click your initials → Settings → Connectors.
  3. Scroll down and click Add custom connector.
  4. Name: Garmin. Remote MCP server URL: paste the URL from step 2.
  5. Leave the OAuth client ID and client secret fields empty (under Advanced settings).
  6. Click Add. Claude lists the tools it found.

You can leave every tool enabled, or turn off the write tools in Claude's connector settings if you only want reads for now.

Step 4: test it

Start a new chat. Click the + / tools button and make sure Garmin is on. Ask:

How did I sleep last night, and is my HRV above or below baseline?

Claude calls daily_overview and answers with your numbers. The first time it uses a tool it may ask permission; choose "Always allow" for the read tools.

What to ask

Writing workouts to your watch Athlete plan

Put a bike session on Saturday: 20 min warm up, 4 × 8 min at 250–270 W with 4 min easy, 10 min cool down.

Claude calls create_workout with power targets and a schedule date, asks you to confirm because the tool is flagged as a write, and the session appears in your Garmin calendar. It also handles weight, hydration and blood-pressure logging, activity renames and gear. Walkthrough →

Tip: make a Garmin project with standing instructions

Create a Claude Project called "Coach", enable the Garmin connector, and put something like this in the project instructions:

You are my running coach. At the start of each conversation call daily_overview for today.
My goal: sub-1:45 half marathon on 2026-12-06. Easy pace 5:40/km, threshold 4:25/km.
Before creating or scheduling any workout, show me the steps and ask for confirmation.

Every chat in that project starts with your data loaded and your goals in mind.

Troubleshooting

"Could not connect to the server"

Check the URL has no spaces and includes the token after /mcp/. The OAuth fields must be empty. If you copied the ChatGPT-style URL (without the token), use the Claude tab instead.

The connector shows but Claude won't use it

Enable it for the chat under the tools menu, and say "use the Garmin tools". In Projects, enable the connector in the project settings.

"Token exchange failed"

Your Garmin token expired (about a year) or you changed your Garmin password. Reconnect from the dashboard.

Claude says the data is from the wrong day

Set your time zone on the dashboard. "Today" is computed in that zone.

FAQ

Can Claude access my Garmin data?

Yes, through a custom connector. Claude supports remote MCP servers on every plan including free. Add Garmin Community MCP as a custom connector and Claude can read your sleep, HRV, training and activities, and on the Athlete plan write workouts to your watch.

Does connecting Garmin to Claude work on the free plan?

Yes. Claude's free plan allows one custom connector, which is enough for Garmin Community MCP. Paid plans allow more connectors and higher usage.

Why does the Claude connector URL contain a token?

Claude's custom connector form supports OAuth or no authentication, but not a static bearer header. Garmin Community MCP therefore gives Claude a URL with your private token embedded, so authentication can be set to none. Keep it private and rotate it from the dashboard if needed.

Does it work in the Claude mobile app?

Yes. Add the connector on web or desktop and it's available in the iOS and Android apps for the same account.
